Toronto Education News: TDSB Announces Staffing Cuts
A look at what’s happening across Toronto’s public education system — and why it matters for international students.
The Toronto District School Board recently announced it will be laying off 218 central administration staff, citing years of declining enrolment, with an additional 91 vacant positions also being eliminated. While the board has said these particular cuts will not directly affect classroom staff, they come on top of a string of other reductions across the TDSB this year, including 40 vice-principal positions, an expected 289 teaching positions next school year, and the closure of several outdoor education programs. The TDSB has been operating under provincial supervision since last June as it works to address a multi-year budget shortfall.
For families of international students currently in, or considering, the Toronto public school system, this pattern of cuts is worth paying close attention to. As boards trim administrative and support roles to manage tight budgets, the kind of dedicated, individualized attention that international students often rely on — settling into a new country, adjusting to a new school system, and navigating language and cultural transitions — can become harder to guarantee consistently.
This is one of the reasons UIS continues to be such a strong choice for international families. With smaller class sizes, dedicated student support staff, and a team focused specifically on the international student experience, UIS is built to provide consistent, personalized support — without the uncertainty that comes with large public boards working through ongoing budget pressures.

World Cup Spirit & Our UIS Soccer Tournament
Our UIS community brought World Cup energy right to campus, then took the spirit onto our own field. Students gathered together to watch Team Canada take on Bosnia, with cheers, flags, and full school spirit filling the room as our students rallied behind the national team. The excitement didn’t stop there — UIS hosted its own soccer tournament, giving students the chance to compete against their peers in an action-packed, friendly competition. From great plays to even better teamwork, the tournament was a fantastic reminder of the energy and camaraderie that make UIS such a special place.

Looking Back: The 2025–2026 School Year
As we wrap up another unforgettable year, we’re taking a moment to celebrate everything our students achieved and experienced together — from September all the way to June.
We kicked things off in September with our 2025 University Fair, welcoming top Canadian universities to campus so students could explore programs and get inspired for their future. In November, we welcomed a new group of students to UIS as the November semester began, and by December we were celebrating the season with our Winter Festival, complete with karaoke and a gingerbread house decorating contest.
The new year brought even more energy: our February Festival lit up the school with art showcases, a fashion runway, and live dance and singing performances (popcorn and hot dogs included), while our top students earned outstanding results at the CEMC Fermat and Euclid math contests. In April, we welcomed another new group of students for the April semester, hosted our ICEF FAM Tour to connect with international partners, celebrated our graduates, and enjoyed a day of rides and laughter at Canada’s Wonderland.
And as the year wrapped up in June, our school spirit was on full display — from cheering on Team Canada and competing in our own soccer tournament, to our Teachers vs. Students volleyball showdown. It’s been a year full of growth, connection, and memories, and we can’t thank our students, families, and staff enough for making 2025–2026 so meaningful. We can’t wait to see what next year brings!
